Emaljeskjold som CB’erne skulle bære på deres uniform så man kunne hvilken tjenestegren de tilhørte.
Under 1. Verdenskrig var brugen af giftgas meget brugt og frygtet af de stridende parter. Derfor var giftgas et stort spørgsmål da man lavede den 1. luftværns lov i 1935 hvor i der blev beskrevet hvad der skulle tages i betragtning, hvis landet skulle blive udsat for et gas-angreb. Men også fredtids anvendelse af gas (bygas o.l.) blev omtalt. hensigten var at mindske risikoen for ulykker i dagligdagen.
Dan 2. luftværns lov kom i 1938 og St.c.l. (Statens civile luftværn) blev oprette. Giftgasser og andre kemiske kampstoffer var noget af det første St.c.l. fog fat på. Allerede i august 1938 blev der indkøbt store mængder af gasdragter, gasmasker, gassporingapparater, klorkalk og kloramin. I 1939 udkom retningslinje nr. 11 for teknisk-tjeneste, som gasbeskyttelsestjenesten i starten var underlagt.
I 1941 bliver gasbeskyttelsestjenesten udskilt fra Teknisk-tjeneste og blev en selvstændig tjenestegren.
Gasbeskyttelsestjenestens opgave
Gasbeskyttelsestjenesten bestod af en gassporingstjeneste som rykkede ud, hvis der var mistanke om at giftgasser var blevet anvendt. Gassporerne skulle finde og afmærke det område som var blevet ramt af gas, og derefter skulle de finde ud af hvilken form for gas der var tale om. Når gassporerne havde afmærket området kunne de tage tilbage til deres udrykningsstation igen.

Når gassporingstjenesten er færdige, rykker gasrensningstjenesten ud og renser det afmærkede område.

Hvis personer blev udsat for sennepsgas skulle de hurtigst mulig bringes til en gas afvaskningsstation hvor sennepsgassen kunne vaskes af, og personernes skader kunne after følgende behandles.
